Hostal Metropol is a three minute walk from Puerta del Sol, making it central to all of the attractions in Madrid. It's located on the corner of Montera and Gran Via, a busy street with lots of shopping, fast food, and cinemas. The feel of this site is not unlike a Spanish Times Square; it's very lively and feels quite safe despite the fact that prostitutes frequent the corner. The Metro stop (Gran Via) is directly in front of the building.
The hostel sleeps 200 in private rooms as well as shared coed dorms. The decor is basic--institutional but cheerful enough. Rooms are clean and very well appointed, with phones, televisions, and private bathrooms. Some even have little terraces. Although the views of Gran Via are lovely, the area can be very noisy well into the night, especially on weekends.
The common area is large and features free internet computers (30 minute limit), books, lots of tourist information, and soda, beer, and sangria for sale. There is no common kitchen, but there is a refrigerator and microwave for guest use. Breakfast is included and consists of a nice variety of bread, cereal, cookies, yogurt, etc. A bottom sheet, pillowcase, and blanket are included in the price as well. The staff is very helpful and most speak English.
Overall, Hostal Metropol is a great deal. It's clean and well-run, and prices are very low considering the en-suite rooms and other perks. Although it is very noisy, the location is convenient, and makes for a great home-base while staying in Madrid.
